The record’s strongest strike is on models Protora did not build, did not finetune, and had never seen — the flagship pair of a broader record of 15 public abliterations caught across six vendors and three architecture families (the community term for a safety-removed model), spanning 0.5B–9B — now streaming memory-flat so 8B/9B models read on an 8GB-class rig. Shown here: huihui-ai’s Qwen2.5-0.5B and Llama-3.2-1B abliterated releases. Protora caught the safety-removal in both, confirmed two independent ways — from the weights and behaviorally. And the record now reaches the whole Llama-8B abliteration class — DETECT now catches the class at 8B, so mlabonne/NeuralDaredevil-8B is now caught, with a narrow but consistent margin and a wide separation from untampered models, 0 false positives — a real capability milestone that closes the 8B size-coverage gap.

Read from the weights, no harm elicited. Protora flags the tampering directly from the model’s weights — without ever prompting the model or eliciting a single harmful response. An auditor, a hub, or a buyer can be shown the tampering was present without the audit itself having to make the model produce the harm. Behavioral witness. Independently, the tampered models comply with harmful requests the official releases refuse.

Honest on the claim: these are self-declared abliterations — the model’s own name announces the safety-removal. The strength of the catch is that Protora’s read is name-blind, taken from the weights alone, so it confirms the tampering independently of the label — not that the tampering was hidden. Catching a strip an uploader hid — undisclosed tampering, caught blind — is a harder bar, and it is staged, not claimed here.

Architecture-robust: the weights-only read fires across all three tested architecture families (Qwen, Llama, and Gemma-2). Honest on the false positives: it does not fire on a benign finetune, nor on a genuine trained benign adapter that edits the very same weights the tampering touches, nor on an adversarial finetune purpose-built to mimic the tampering’s shape — every benign control lands far below the threshold (thousands of times lower). Scores are shown only as relative — the finding is what ships.

RESPONSIBLE DISCLOSURE

A genuine backdoor in a public finetune is handled maintainer-first and embargoed before any public entry appears. The maintainer gets the witness and a window to fix it first — the record documents catches, never live exploits. What you read here has been disclosed, not weaponized.

Beyond the flagship pair, Protora ran a curated batch of 14 real public HuggingFace models it did not make, tune, or see — graded name-blind against ground truth. This is the more credible proof than a catch on models we chose: zero false positives on the unseen clean models, and the false negatives owned by name. It is a curated batch, not a wild-population census.
